On May 21 and 22, 2022, the Theoretical Economics graduate students’ graduation defense of Shenzhen University (SZU) was held in meeting room 628 of Huiyuan Building. Prof. Ai Chunrong of the Chinese University of HongKong, Shenzhen was invited as the chairman of the doctoral defense, Prof. Wu Liangcheng, Deputy Dean of China Development Institute (Shenzhen) as the external expert of the doctoral defense and Prof. Chen Zhao of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies as the chairman of the master’s defense. The defense review was also attended by Prof. Tao Yitao, Director of the China Center for Special Economic Zone Research (CCSEZR), and the leader of the discipline of Theoretical Economics, Prof. Li Fan, Deputy Director of CCSEZR, Prof. Yuan Yiming of CCSEZR, Prof. Xu Xiaoguang, Distinguished Prof. Li Donghui, and Prof. Wu Fenglan of School of Economics, Distinguished Prof. Zhang Qingyu of the School of Management, Prof. Zhou Li of Social Science Department, Associate Prof. Le Xiaofang and Assistant Prof. Ma Limei of CCSEZR.
Prof. Ai Chunrong is currently the economic professor of the School of Management and Economics, the presidential chair professor of Chinese University of HongKong, Shenzhen, director of the FEMBA/EE project of Shenzhen Finance Institute, CUHK(SZ), and director of the Social Behavior Big Data Laboratory of Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data. He graduated from the School of Mathematics and Statistics of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 1982, received his M.S. degree in 1985, and his Ph.D. degree in the Department of Economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1990. He is a tenured professor in the Department of Economics, Wellington College of Business Administration, University of Florida, USA, and a part-time professor at East China Jiaotong University. He was the dean of the School of Statistics and Management at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and the director of the Institute of Statistics and Big Data at Renmin University of China in 2015. The major areas of his research include Econometrics, Empirical Microeconomics, Empirical Finance, and Empirical Economics of Industrial Organization.
Prof. Wu Chengliang is currently the deputy dean of China Development Institute (Shenzhen), researcher and postdoctoral supervisor; member of the seventh Standing Committee of Shenzhen CPPCC, Ph.D. in Economics and Master in Applied Mathematics. He is the president of China Opening Journal, director and secretary general of the Shenzhen Soft Science Development Foundation; visiting professor of Nankai Institute of International Economics, and member of the Advisory Committee of Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle. He has presided over and completed dozens of national and provincial and ministerial research programs, mainly involving macroeconomic trend analysis, policy orientation of RMB exchange rate and interest rate, the international competitiveness of industries and public policy research in the process of urbanization. He has also provided policy recommendations for local governments at all levels in terms of industrial development and government regulation of public utilities.
Prof. Chen Zhao is the doctoral supervisor of the School of Economics and Trade of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Ph.D. in Economics of Nankai University, director of China Centre for Cliometrics Studies, director of Institute of Quantitative Economics, anonymous reviewer of many authoritative journals in China, and cultivator of the "Thousand Hundred Ten" project in Guangdong Province. His major areas of research include Regional Economics, Monetary Theory, Cliometrics and International Economics Theory and Policy.

Attending the defenses were 18 master's students and 12 doctoral students in Theoretical Economics, including four doctoral students of secondary discipline outside the catalog (Management Science and Economic Decision-making, and Institutional Innovation and Cultural Creativity) and one international doctoral student in Theoretical Economics. During the defense, the experts upheld a rigorous and serious academic attitude to students’ reports, focusing on the standards and logicality of their theses, the depth and innovation of their research and the construction of their empirical models. The degree applicants responded well to the experts’ questions and recorded their opinions in detail. The defense proceeded in a serious yet friendly atmosphere.
As the first-level discipline doctoral program and platform for interdisciplinary studies of Theoretical Economics, CCSEZR of SZU has been exploring the mode of cultivating excellent graduate students for years. The graduation defense is not only an examination for the quality of graduates' cultivation, but also an opportunity for master’s candidates to learn from outstanding experts in economics. CCSEZR will continue to attach importance to the seriousness of theses, and guide graduate students to lay a solid academic research foundation and scale greater academic heights.
