On the afternoon of September 25th, Shenzhen University (SZU) organized an opening ceremony for the 2020 new graduate students in Theoretical Economics in the lecture hall 3, Huixing Building. Attending were Prof. Tao Yitao, Director of the China Center for Special Economic Zone Research (CCSEZR), SZU and President of the Belt and Road Research Institute (Shenzhen) for International Cooperation and Development (BRRI), Prof. Chen Yong, Dean of the College of International Exchange, Prof. Zheng Zunxin, Dean of the College of Economics, Prof. Yuan Yiming, Deputy Director of the CCSEZR, Prof. Zhou Zhimin, Deputy Dean of the College of Management, Prof. Zhang Kai, Dean of the College of Financial Technology, and some advisors and graduate, doctoral and postdoctoral students enrolling in 2020 in Theoretical Economics. The ceremony was hosted by Prof. Yuan Yiming.

Prof. Tao Yitao introduces the development milestones of the discipline and gives a speech
Prof. Tao Yitao gave a detailed introduction of the development milestones and faculty of the discipline, research results of CCSEZR, achievements of World Special Economic Zone Development Forum, overseas academic visit mechanism and international cooperation projects. Prof. Tao pointed out that on the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (SEZ), a review of the growth history of CCSEZR was a commemoration of the selfless, fearless and farsighted predecessors who have devoted wisdom and thoughts to the development of SEZs and China’s reform and opening-up, but of Shenzhen SEZ itself. She expected students to cherish the opportunities, the platform and the spiritual tradition in Theoretical Economics. Finally, Prof. Tao expressed the hope that students can unfold their creativity and imagination here, walk in with passion and leave campus with achievements.
At the opening ceremony, relevant college leaders, representatives of theoretical economics advisors, and student representatives also made speeches.
Prof. Chen Yong delivers a speech
Prof. Chen Yong gave a speech on behalf of the PhD advisors in Theoretical Economics. Based on years of advisor experience, he gave three suggestions for doctoral students: 1. Stay focused on studying, actively communicate with advisors on a regular basis and report latest research status. 2. Pay attention to topic selections of thesis, since at the beginning of an academic journey, the topic selection of thesis is very important and a wrong topic will be a tragic beginning. 3. Make contributions to the discipline, study assiduously and publish more high-level papers.
Prof. Zheng Zunxin delivers a speech
Prof. Zheng Zunxin emphasized that before doing academic research, students must first learn to behave themselves, and secondly broaden their knowledge and develop the ability to learn independently. Furthermore, Prof. Zheng made suggestions to the students on research goals and methods. He pointed out that structured analysis, more time for thinking and the combination of theory and practice are essential for academic work. Mr. Zheng said that students should maintain a good attitude since it is normal for research to be bottlenecked or for papers to be rejected, and efforts would pay off as long as they continue to overcome the immediate difficulties.
Prof. Zhou Zhimin delivers a speech
Prof. Zhou Zhimin, based on his own experience, provided valuable suggestions to the students on independent learning, time management, and communication practice. Prof. Zhou pointed out that students should learn methodically, manage time, study independently, pay attention to practice, develop interests and hobbies, love sports, and communicate more with others, since these usual practices are beneficial to physical and mental health and can help students’ academic research.
Prof. Wu Fenglan from the College of Economics delivers a speech
Prof. Wu Fenglan of the College of Economics made a speech on behalf of the advisors in Theoretical Economics. As one of the earliest graduates in Theoretical Economics, she recalled her study experience and marveled at the continuous expansion of the faculty and abundant academic achievements in recent years. Prof. Wu hoped that students would cherish the never-stopping spirit in Theoretical Economics, not forget their original aspirations, and forge ahead with one step at a time.

The representatives of senior students and graduates also shared their learning experience with the freshmen. Dr. Wei Jianzhang, an outstanding graduate of 2010, reviewed his valuable learning experience in Theoretical Economics and thanked the teachers for their cultivation and devotion. In addition, he suggested that students should find their own points of interest when doing research, and insist on studying true problems and be realistic.

The opening ceremony came to a successful conclusion with expectations and encouragement. The students are all proud that they were able to study theoretical economics at Shenzhen University and walk into the campus at the 40th anniversary of Shenzhen SEZ. They will live up to their youth, study hard, complete their studies with excellent grades, pass on the style of study, spirit and character formed in Theoretical Economics, and become outstanding scholars and virtuous people.
