On September 25, 2020, a video conference was hosted at 4 pm between the China Center for Special Economic Zone Research (CCSEZR), Shenzhen University (SZU) and the Belt and Road Research Institute (Shenzhen) for International Cooperation and Development (BRRI) and the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Institute (CAREC Institute). Attendees from SZU were Prof. Tao Yitao (Director of the CCSEZR and President of the BRRI), Yuan Yiming (Deputy Director of the CCSEZR), Gao Xingmin (Deputy Director of the CCSEZR and Supervisor of the BRRI), Gu Wei (Deputy Dean of the College of International Exchange, SZU), Han Zhongxue (Deputy Dean of the BRRI), Wang Yanming (Chairman of the “Belt and Road: Russia and Central Asia Trade Alliance” under the BRRI), Yun Wenjie (a teacher from the CCSEZR and BRRI), and Chen Hongquan (a teacher from the CCSEZR). Attendees from CAREC Institute were Liang Ziqian (First Deputy Director), Iskandar Abdullaev (Second Deputy Dean),·Hans Holzhacker (a chief economist of the CAREC Institute), Qaisar Abbas (Chief of the Research Division), Khalid Umar (Chief of the Strategic Planning Division) and Eisa Khan Ayoob Ayoobi (Chief of the Capacity Building Division).
Prof. Tao kicked off the conference with a speech. She said that the CCSEZR & BRRI have long maintained a successful collaboration with CAREC Institute all the time, so the conference would delve into the pathway to cooperation. Subsequently, Prof. Yuan gave a detailed introduction about CCSEZR’s history, academic team, academic standing and representative achievements, and finally a highlight on the talent fostering and post-doctoral research base construction. Next, teacher Yun gave an overview of BRRI’s background, organizational structure and its finished, ongoing and upcoming projects.

Liang Ziqian, Deputy Dean of CAREC Institute, gave a brief introduction of the CAREC Institute: “CAREC Institute is an intergovernmental international organization headquartered in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. It’s originated from the CAREC Program initiated by the Asian Development Bank, and committed to promoting economic cooperation in Central Asia through knowledge cooperation and sharing, and boosting economic and social development through inter-regional transportation, trade policies, trade facilitation and energy.” Deputy Dean Iskander Abdullah gave a brief introduction to the research work and training business of the CAREC Institute.

Gu Wei, Deputy Dean of the College of International Exchange, elaborated on SZU’s admission and scholarship policies for overseas students. Gao Xingmin, Deputy Director of the CCSEZR, proposed five suggestions on the joint development of the post-doctoral research platform of Theoretical Economics at SZU.

The two sides had a detailed discussion on the following matters: joint development of cooperation platforms (e.g. an academic platform for Central Asia and China, and a platform for Chinese entrepreneurs to invest and trade in Central Asia), the construction of special zones in Central Asian countries in the post-pandemic era, the scientific research cooperation on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, and the joint staging of “SEZs in China and Central Asia: Bay Area Development Forum”.
Finally, Prof. Tao concluded: “the conference today was highly effective. We have reached agreement on the idea of working together to establish a joint training practice base for postdoctoral fellows majored in theoretical economics at SZU, and agreed to work together on the study of SEZs and the Greater Bay Area, and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.” Deputy Dean Liang also said that this video conference was effective and informative, which helped him get a better understanding of the CCSEZR and the BRRI. He agreed upon the cooperation such as establishing a joint training practice base for postdoctoral fellows majored in theoretical economics at SZU. He also expressed his hope for more in-depth cooperation in the future!
