On the afternoon of November 26, 2023, the 5th Academic Salon for Ph.D. Students in Theoretical Economics in 2023 (65th in history) was staged smoothly by the China Center for Special Economic Zone Research (CCSEZR), Shenzhen University (SZU) in conference room No.1500 of the Huiwen Building. The keynote speaker of the salon was Dr. Jiang Dalin, Level-3 Researcher, Senior Engineer, and Ph.D in climate change economics of CHN Energy National Institute of Energy Technology and Economics. His research interest mainly focuses on the technologies, economics and policies in Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS), climate and energy economy carbon market, and corporate carbon asset management. He has won honorary titles such as “Beijing Outstanding Young Engineer” and “Most Beautiful Coal Science and Technology Worker”, as well as provincial and ministerial science and technology achievement awards such as the “First Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress in China's Coal Industry”. He has presided over and participated in more than 10 major research projects of the CHN Energy and provincial and ministerial organizations, and also participated in the research and establishment of strategic national plans on CCUS development, such as the “Roadmap for Carbon Capture and Storage Demonstration and Deployment in the People’s Republic of China”. His publications include “Clean and Efficient Utilization of Coal and Economic and Social Transformation and Development under Carbon Neutrality” and “Study on the Path of Global Commercialization of CCS”.
The lecture focuses on the theme of “Feasibility of Combining Coal-based Energy with CCUS Technology in China and its Comprehensive Impact on Economic and Social Development”. It was presided over by the Associate Prof. Ma Limei and attended by teachers and graduate students of CCSEZR.
At the beginning of the lecture, Prof. Ma briefly introduced Dr. Jiang’s research interest and achievements. Dr. Jiang expressed his happiness in giving a speech at CCSEZR and thanked Prof. Ma for the invitation and hosting of the lecture. He introduced his research results in recent years in four parts. In the first part, he introduced the background and general idea of his research from the development path of energy transition under the goal of carbon neutrality. In the second part, he introduced the technological needs of climate change mitigation and CCUS from global climate governance, China’s energy transition, and coal-based energy development. In the third part, he analyzed the technical and economic feasibility of CCUS for coal-based energy by introducing the technical method combining the macroeconomic model and engineering model. In the fourth part, he analyzed the comprehensive impacts of the scale application of CCUS for coal power generation, and systematically evaluated the value of the role of coal-based energy combined with CCUS technology in promoting the sustainable use of coal-based energy, enhancing the resilience and flexibility of the optimization path of China’s energy structure, and controlling the overall socio-economic cost of realizing the dual-carbon goals.
At the end of the lecture, Prof. Ma and the students had a lively discussion with Dr. Jiang and he seriously answered all the questions raised by teachers and students. Through this lecture, the students gained a deeper understanding of the related fields.
The academic lecture maintained high enthusiasm and positive atmosphere from the beginning to the end. It has strong theoretical and cutting-edge characteristics and provides a platform for teachers and students of CCSEZR to broaden their academic perspective and understand cutting-edge academic knowledge.
