Shenzhen Miracle Manifests CPC’s Wisdom on Reform
Author: Prof. Tao Yitao (Director of the China Center for Special Economic Zone Research, Shenzhen University)
President Xi Jinping delivered a key speech on October 14, 2020 at the 40
th anniversary of the establishment of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (SEZ). He pointed out that Shenzhen is a brand-new city created by the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Chinese people after the country’s reform and opening up, which has perfectly practiced the socialism with Chinese characteristics.
This year marks the centennial of the CPC. Looking back into the 40-year history of Chinese SEZs, we can find that the CPC has led Chinese people to emancipate minds, get rid of centrally planned economy, explore a feasible socialist modernization path, and create SEZs. Thanks to the CPC, China has created a miracle that stunned the world.
The establishment and prosperity of Shenzhen and other SEZs are milestones in the CPC history. These SEZs have not only practiced but also enriched Marxism through constant exploratory breakthroughs in societal transformation. They have also helped the CPC develop a theoretical system of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the Chinese solutions that can be learned by emerging markets and transition economies. SEZs have a unique historical mission and play an irreplaceable role in the evolution of Chinese social institution. As a crucial part of the socialism with Chinese characteristics, SEZs and the Chinese path are valuable theoretical and ideological assets of the CPC.
Shenzhen is China’s first SEZ that dabbled in reform and opening-up and made the greatest achievement and influence. It has contributed remarkably to China’s reform and opening-up and socialist modernization. Establishing SEZs is a great initiative proposed by the CPC and the Chinese government on their way to exploring “progressive reform with Chinese characteristics”. The success of Shenzhen proves that the CPC has made wise decisions on establishing SEZs, conducting progressive reform with Chinese characteristics, applying non-balanced development approaches, and choosing the Chinese path.
In the century-long glorious history of the CPC, reform and opening-up is a great awakening of our party, which has nurtured a remarkable innovation from theory to practice. Reform and opening-up has its unique historical significance and theoretical and practical values.
The reform and opening up that began in 1978 reveals the CPC’s courage for self-revolution and their fearless critical spirit in challenging dogmatism. Taking the Chinese path by abandoning the centrally planned economy and establishing the socialist market economy fully demonstrates the CPC’s confidence in their own path, theories, institutions and culture. Shenzhen SEZ, as a pilot area for socialist market economy, denotes the CPC’s wisdom. The successful practice of China’s reform and opening up policy manifests the power of the CPC’s thoughts and the development path they have chosen. These thoughts and path are a great treasure that we will find along the evolution journey of both the CPC and the China’s economic reform.
Shenzhen has started a new chapter in the new era. Now it is entering a golden period thanks to the advocacy by Chinese government for establishing Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and transforming Shenzhen into a pilot demonstration area. We believe that Shenzhen will achieve greater success and continue to exhibit the power and wisdom of Xi Jining’s thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics.
