The Mid-Autumn Festival around the corner will see a new crop of students. On the afternoon of September 11, 2019, China Center for Special Economic Zone Research (CCSEZR), Shenzhen University (SZU) organized a welcome meeting for the 2019 new graduate students in Theoretical Economics in the conference room of the office building. Attending the meeting were Prof. Tao Yitao, Director of CCSEZR, Prof. Tian Qibo, Director of Social Science Department, Prof. Yuan Yiming, Deputy Director of CCSEZR, Prof. Ding Xueliang from the Center for Chinas Overseas Interests (CCOI), Prof. Zhang Kai, Chinese President of Shenzhen Audencia Business School (SABS), Prof. Pan Yanchun, Vice President of the College of Management and some advisors and graduate, doctoral and postdoctoral students enrolling in 2019 in Theoretical Economics. Prof. Tao Yitao presided over the meeting.
At the meeting, all attendees first watched a documentary about Prof. Su Dongbin, Founder of the Theoretical Economics discipline, and learned in detailed the development milestones of the discipline. Then Prof. Tao Yitao extended warm welcome to the freshmen and gave an introduction to the development and faculty of the discipline, research results of CCSEZR, achievements of World Special Economic Zone Development Forum and overseas academic visit mechanism. She indicated that it is the pioneering and painstaking efforts of predecessors that have made what we have today in Theoretical Economics. And she expected students to remember these dedicators and dive into academic research under the inspiration of their faith. Furthermore, Prof. Tao said that Theoretical Economics boasted an influential faculty that provide students with strong scientific research support, and the discipline offer a space for students to freely learn and develop. She also encouraged students to cherish the time spent at CCSEZR, seize the opportunities it offers, keep up with academic trends, concentrate on academics, and make right choices.
Prof. Yuan Yiming made three suggestions for the freshmen: to comprehend the discipline, keep close contact with advisors and seize opportunities of this era. He expected students to develop their unique mindsets with characteristics of the discipline and lay a solid foundation for academic research. In his view, students should keep close contact with their advisors, make the best use of the knowledge imparted by them, appreciate their great qualities, and follow their pace to make constant progress. He also pointed out that every student in Shenzhen, the most dynamic and innovative city, should seize opportunities of this era and make wise choices.
In the meeting, each advisor shared their opinions, including helpful suggestions on research targets, research methods, academic norms, academic exchange, time management and physical and mental health, in addition to brief introductions on respective research fields. During the following discussion session, every freshman gave a self-introduction and stated their understanding of the discipline and future academic career. All of them were looking forward to the upcoming school life.
The welcome meeting was successfully concluded in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.
